Advice Please
I need some help.
Obvi with the new apartment, I am in need of new things, most of which I haven't even begun to think about (nor will I until I'm actually in the space, realizing how large it is and how little I have). A nice couch I gots, or soon will gots, thanks to Mama LL. Sleeping accommodations, however, are another thing. The twin bed I've been riding--as Poo so kindly pointed out--won't really cut it. So I'm in the market. And so far, I have three options:
Curtain #1
I have a futon. Although the mattress would need to be replaced (the old one has been rolled up in the basement for far too long), it is quite comfy, and quite big. I've always loved that futon, and it's done me well in the past, all the way through university. I also like a bit of a harder bed, and the futon is defs that. Tops, I'd be spending about $250. But--and this is a valid "but"--do I want to start fresh on a futon?
Curtain #2
Fingers has offered me a 3/4 bed from her house. This would be an actual bed with a box spring and mattress. But it's a bit smaller than a double. And I'm not sure I'm too down with that (coming off a twin, I want to maximize my sprawl space as much as possible). Although it's free, I would have to probably buy new sheets (although I might be able to fit double sheets on there... Not quite sure...)
Curtain #3
Purchase an entirely new bed. I don't think I'd be able to afford a set and a frame, so we'd just be talking a mattress and box spring. I also don't have $1000 to sink into a bed, so we're not talking top quality, either. But I'd be able to get a perfect fit, or quasi perfect fit, and I know I'd have it for down the road, be it in a spare room when I have more money to by THE perfect cozy place.
So... Tell me what to do. Does anyone have experience with a 3/4? Is there much of a size difference? Do I need new sheets? Do I buy an Ikea bed? Do I go to Sears or Leons and buy something I can't afford and pay for it later? Is there anything wrong with a futon? Do you have another option for me, maybe one I haven't even considered?
Thanks peeps!

Ikea beds in my experience, have not been comfortable, sure they look perky and tidy, but comfort -no. I would splurg for a new bed, since you have time, you could be a bargin hunter (floor model?).
No matter what the end choice of bed, I can't wait to see your new place! If you need help painting, I looooove painting :)
Are you serious!? I would lurve the help. I HATE painting. I don't want to paint much, because the white looks good with the hard wood (or from what I remember, at least), but I do want to paint the bedroom a really pretty grey-blue. I've always dreamed of having a grey-blue bedroom.
And thanks for the tip re: Ikea.
Where have you been, Lady G?! Did you go to Safari-a-go-go-land?!
Let me measure the supposed 3/4" bed because I really think it's a double bed and I don't trust BSB's bed sizing skills... since I have always put double sheets on it without issue and let's be honest he's never put any sheets on it! I will measure my double bed in Kingston and compare it to the bed tomorrow when I get home! And than we can confirm for sure! but as always I'd suggest looking into sleep country for beds prices... my whole family buys beds there and as we know my family is all about deals! I only spent about $500 on mine (including frame, 2 pillows, and delivery) and it's my favorite bed ever!
Fingers!
my opinion is it is not worth being cheap when it comes to your bed. I know you are thinking i am not cheap with anything but especially not my bed. the futon is done, over, out, thrown out with old bathwater. you need to start new.
you spend more time in your bed then anywhere else and you want to make it inticing to anyone who may want to join you in sitting in it.
Yes, sign me up for painting! I will get my painting outfit prepped.
Sarfari-a-go-go starts tomorrow at 6 am from Buffalo!!! Will tell you all about it when I see you next. Lions and Tigers.... :)
I will vouch for Sleep Country too. Fingers bed was a super comfpy one, I think you have say "why buy a mattress anywhere else" in a sing songy voice and they give you free pillows?
My other general rules with beds are go big or go home. :)
DO NOT buy a futon. NO NO NO. Futons are fine for uni or for your den in the basement but for real if you wanna feel like real grownup and I knows you do then treat yourself to a wicked bed cause when you turn 30 you're not gonna want to be sleeping on the futon.
remember how on sex and the city miranda made a really nice bed, in the hopes that if she enjoyed it in there, men would follow (or some such logic)?
i have a nice bed. i have reaaaallly nice bedspreads, sheets, pillows, the works. this year, i'm getting myself an actual FRAME. my teddies and i thoroughly enjoy the grownupness of our real, 100% our own, bed.
in other words: make it the best bed ever. that way, no matter who comes and goes out of the bed, you are happy happy happy all the time with your awesome, grownup bed. skimp on your couch, have second-hand dishes, but make the bed All Yours.

I endorse the Ikea bed. I've slept on one for the past 10 years and if you like harder beds (which I do as well), it may be an affordable solution to your bed issues. I think the Ikea bedroom event is on now and you can get some great deals. We also have a pillow top matress on ours to add some extra pouf.
p.s. Is there really such a thing as a 3/4 bed? I've never heard of one. Perhaps it goes in the bed myths category along with the "emperor" bed that someone told me is larger than a King.
I grew up with a 3/4 bed and it followed me all the way to Edmonton! (remember Mr. Brassy?) They do exisit and they are smaller than a double. Almost too small for two people (unless you really like cuddling all freaking night). I think the 3/4 beds were from our grandma's days, but they still seem to be around in hand-me-downs and garage sales. I agree with everyone else - buy a new bed. It is important.

(plus, it needs to be big enough for me to sleep in too when I come to visit you!)
